Gala Concert 2024: A Night of Musical Brilliance at the University of Pretoria
On the evening of October 12, 2024, the University of Pretoria’s Musaion was graced with the powerful voices of the UP Youth Choir, accompanied by extraordinary musicians in a performance that captivated the audience and left a lasting impression. The Gala Concert 2024 brought together an eclectic mix of contemporary compositions, traditional African pieces, and soul-stirring spirituals, demonstrating the versatility and artistry of the choir and its collaborators.
A Symphony of Sounds and Emotions
The concert opened with Lux Beata Trinitas, a beautiful and meditative piece by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, who has quickly become a favorite of the modern choral world. Sung in Latin, the piece echoed with reverence and tranquility, setting a serene tone for the evening. The performance featured the skilled piano accompaniment of Morné van der Westhuyzen and the ethereal oboe playing of Johanni Wolmarans, whose delicate notes provided a perfect counterpoint to the choir’s majestic harmonies.
Next, the choir performed Luminous Night of the Soul, a truly transcendent composition by Gjeilo, written for choir, piano, and strings. This piece was particularly special, featuring UPYC alumni members who returned to join the performance. The string quartet, consisting of Chris Evens and Megan Kingon on violin, Friederike Scholtz on viola, and Kevin Gersteling on cello, added depth and warmth to the performance, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere that enveloped the audience.
A Celebration of African Music and Culture
The concert also highlighted the richness of African musical heritage, with two deeply moving pieces in isiZulu. Ngothando by Mbuso Ndlovu carried a poignant message of love’s ability to break down barriers, while Lomhlaba, a traditional hymn arranged by O. Simelane, reflected on the imperfections of life and the hope for a brighter future. The choir’s powerful rendition of these pieces resonated deeply, leaving the audience contemplating the themes of unity and resilience.
One of the most moving moments of the evening was Even When He Is Silent, composed by Kim Andre Arnesen. Inspired by a message scrawled on the wall of a concentration camp during World War II, this piece expresses unwavering faith in the face of hardship. The choir’s heartfelt rendition, combined with the emotional lyrics, left a profound impact, reminding everyone of the power of hope, even in the darkest of times.
Uplifting and Inspirational Performances
The concert also included several uplifting and energetic numbers, such as the powerful Great God Almighty, a traditional spiritual arranged by Kirby Shaw, and the ever-inspirational Lift Me Up from the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, arranged by Emily Drum. These pieces filled the space with joy, offering a sense of collective empowerment that echoed throughout the venue.
The crowd was further energized by Emarabini, a traditional South African lullaby made famous by the Soweto Gospel Choir. Sung in isiXhosa, this piece tells the story of Emarabini, an orphaned girl who is embraced by her community, demonstrating the African principle of Ubuntu—humanity towards others. The performance was a beautiful testament to the power of community and love.
A Tale of Love and Faith
Another highlight of the evening was Shona Malanga by Mpumelelo Manyathi, a love song sung in isiZulu. This piece, about courtship and enduring love, resonated deeply with the audience, evoking a sense of timeless connection and romance.
The concert concluded with a rousing performance of Faith, originally by Stevie Wonder and arranged by Mark Brymer. The upbeat number, from the show Sing!, left the audience feeling uplifted, with a renewed sense of optimism and belief in the power of faith.
Special Moments and Gratitude
The evening ended with two beautiful pieces—Tebepojem, a Serbian prayer for peace composed by S. Mocranic, and Swiloyini, a collection of traditional South African folk songs, which served as the perfect epilogue to an evening of musical splendor.
Special thanks were given to the team behind the scenes who made this concert possible, including Robert Gush for sound recording and Neil Musto for video recording, as well as the dedicated staff of UPYC: Artistic Director Lhente-Mari Pitout, Associate Conductor Herman Swanepoel, Manager & Graphic Designer Herman Piek, Financial Manager Sophia Booysen, Music Intern & Percussionist Akhile Dlula, and Social Media Liaison Ontiretse Magadzi. A special mention also went to the Interns 2024: Lehlohonolo Mokoena and Lesego Maifadi.
