As Financial Manager of the University of Pretoria Youth Choir, Sophia believes that sound financial stewardship is about far more than balancing budgets—it is about creating opportunities that change lives. Every investment made in the choir supports the development of young South Africans, providing an environment where talented but often timid singers grow into confident young adults with exceptional musical ability, leadership qualities, and lifelong skills.
UPYC’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the rehearsal room. Through partnerships with street bead artists in Pretoria and members of the disabled community who package and market handcrafted products to international audiences, the choir creates meaningful economic opportunities while helping to fund its mission. This unique initiative demonstrates how responsible financial management can multiply impact, ensuring that every contribution supports not only the choir but also the wider community.
As bead artist Michael explains: “Creating the beaded products has not only helped me support my family financially but has also enabled me to employ my colleagues during large orders. It has given me the courage to continue doing what I love and teaching others along the way.”
